Avtron’s Business Management System is certified to ISO 9001
the International Standard for Quality Management Systems. The scope of
our certification includes the design, development,
and manufacture of: Resistive & Reactive Load Banks, Industrial
Resistors; Aircraft electrical and fuel component test systems,
Hydraulic test equipment; Digital control systems, Motor test equipment,
and Digital instrumentation systems.
Since its inception in 1953, Avtron’s foundation has been
firmly rooted in its commitment to quality.
Avtron originally achieved certification to ISO 9000 in 1996 and since
that time we have expanded the scope of our system while successfully
maintaining our certification. Our comprehensive Business Management
System incorporates or exceeds all imposed requirements and provides
guidance and direction for Avtron employees in support of our
organizational commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and
continual improvement. Lean initiatives on the manufacturing floor and
within the office environment have been integrated into our culture
resulting in both value and assured quality for our customers. |
| Customers and Products |
Avtron's customers include 95% of the "Fortune 500" as well
as nearly every major airline in the world. Generally,
products can be broken down into four categories:
- Incremental
Encoders for measuring speed and position in industrial control
systems. Users include heavy industry, the wind turbine industry,
and offshore oil platforms. Avtron was recently awarded $1,000,000
by the Ohio Third Frontier program to extend this technology further
into wind turbines.
- Drive Systems.
Avtron specializes in retrofitting modern digital controls onto
large machines in the Steel, Paper, Mining, Marine Propulsion, and
Crane Industries.
- Load Banks for
testing and commissioning emergency standby generators
uninterruptible power supplies, and data centers.
- Aerospace Test
Equipment. These are complex computer coordinated systems for
testing electrical and hydraulic components and systems. Avtron
systems are installed all over the world.

The diversity of technologies within Avtron creates high levels of
enthusiasm, growth, and responsibility among engineers. As the head of
electrical engineering at Cleveland State University once said upon
touring Avtron's facilities, "My graduates can see more
technologies under one roof in your building than any other company that
recruits in Cleveland." It is not uncommon for engineers to be promoted and transferred to
projects involving other product areas, and Avtron's engineering
management attempts to ensure a high degree of synergy. For example,
many reasons why Avtron's digital drive systems are reliable can be
traced to money spent by both the government and aircraft manufacturers
to determine how to make flying electronics reliable.
|
| Personnel and Technical Staff |
| Over one third of Avtron's staff are technical personnel with
four-year degrees or higher. The majority have backgrounds in electrical
and mechanical engineering, electronics or computers. Their expertise
includes electrical rotating machinery, power and hydraulics. Many
Avtron product design engineers come from Avtron's Field Engineering
Department, which provides excellent background in understanding
customer needs. Others are hired directly from colleges and
universities. |
| Field Engineering and Quality Control Capability |
| At Avtron, the head of quality control reports to the
CEO, not
to the manufacturing manager. This ensures that pressures to meet
shipments do not override the organization's quality control principles,
despite the tendency to do so "just this once." Quality has
long been the highest priority of our company. Avtron's quality system
is certified to ISO 9001 requirements.
Avtron has approximately 30 degreed field service engineers. On major
systems, the same service engineers who will start-up the system in the
field are charged with final testing at Avtron, developing a unique
degree of familiarity.
Since Avtron systems, whether aircraft
test systems or drive control systems, often involve high-tech
components installed at remote customer sites, where customer
maintenance personnel may not be as familiar with the equipment as
Avtron personnel, Avtron has developed methods to improve reliability
and ease of maintenance. In general, the most complex Avtron system can
be maintained on an emergency basis by an electrician with a telephone.
