FLAT PRODUCTS HOT ROLLING
Avtron Flat Products Hot Rolling Control Systems ensure the highest mill production availability and the best rolling performance possible. Our engineered system solutions have proven we are the Uptime and Performance Experts in North America and Asian Mills. Our zero-downtime, cost-effective and easy-to-install limited system upgrades can get your mill operating at peak performance for a fraction of the cost of an all-new system.

Avtron has many drive installations on world-record producing Continuous Casting and Hot Rolling Mills. We can offer your mill engineered diagnostic and drive system solutions for all areas of Hot Strip and Plate Mills including Steckel and Roughing Mills, Edgers, Scale Breakers, Coil Boxes, Crop Shears, Holding/Runout Tables, Finishing Mills, and Downcoilers.

Avtron also offers its Performance View Process Diagnostic System for Hot Rolling Applications. The system automatically uploads and stores events, status bits, drive values, and PLC data from the controllers used in these areas of the mill. This data can be viewed, searched, and manipulated easily and quickly through our P.V. Viewer software to allow faster problem identification and repair. It can also be used as part of a Predictive or Preventive Maintenance Program to establish 'normal running conditions' for later comparisons.

Avtron has retrofit experience in several projects to upgrade Blooming Mills. We have done both the Main Mill and the Auxiliary Drives for these applications.

Our ADDvantage-32 (TM) Advanced Firing Module has been used for SCR retrofits on Main Mill 12-pulse drives and our ADDvantage-32 Advanced DC Drive has been used for the auxiliary sections. These retrofits can save tens of thousands of dollars in capital expenditures and can be done with Zero-Downtime installation and startup schedules.

We also have AC drives available for the table sections of these mills. We offer both a stand-alone, non-regenerative and a common DC bus design for regenerative, reversing applications. These can be applied in either one-drive/one-motor/one roll or one-drive/multi-motor/multi-roll configurations. Our AC drives are available up to 2000 HP and 690 VAC.

Avtron drives have been used on all sections of Hot Strip Mills including the main drives for the Roughing and Finishing Mills. We have applied our ADDvantage-32 (TM) DC Drives and SCR Retrofits in both 6-pulse and 12-pulse arrangements, our AC Flux Vector Drives and our family of Motor and Generator (MG) Set Field Regulators for Hot Mill Upgrades. We have also applied our AC drive family to Holding and Runout Table Applications.

Avtron specializes in retrofits in the Hot Mill for either obsolete SCR drives or MG set applications. Our ADDvantage-32 Advanced Firing Module can fire up to 48 forward and 48 reverse parallel SCR bridges. It has been designed to upgrade older drives like the General Electric Silcomatic and the Westinghouse M4.

MG set upgrades use Avtron’s ADDvantage-32 Advanced Generator Field and Motor Field Regulators.  These are available for any size MG Set. We have also used these products for Crop Shear and Downcoiler projects. These retrofits can be applied for a fraction of the cost of new drives and can be easily installed with Zero-Downtime on the Mill.

We also have experience with AC Drives in many system designs for Holding and Runout Table applications. These include stand-alone AC drives for multiple parallel motors and common DC bus applications where each AC drive runs one motor and one roll.

Steckel Mills

Avtron drives are ideally suited for Steckel Mill applications. We have used our ADDvantage-32 (TM) DC Products for both 6 and 12-pulse SCR Retrofits and for new armature drives. We also offer generator and motor field controls for MG Set retrofits.

Our standard hardware and software can easily perform the complex controls required for the Main Mill Stands and the Coil Boxes, on either side of the mill. These can be applied to mills producing either coiled materials or plate/sheet products. For coiled products, we can also supply the controls for the final Downcoiler.

Avtron retrofits for the Steckel Mill can be supplied for either static drives or MG Sets. For static drives, our ADDvantage-32 Advanced Firing Module can fire up to 48 forward and 48 reverse parallel SCR bridges. Another version of the drive is used for three-phase, digital generator field control. For both retrofits, we also offer a digital motor field regulator. These retrofits can be commissioned on a Zero-Downtime Upgrade and can be done at a fraction of the cost of new drives.

Plate Mills

Avtron ADDvantage-32 (TM) DC Drives have also been used for upgrading Plate Mills. This product line is ideally suited for retrofitting old Plate Mill Drive Systems because we offer a combination of retrofit options for the Main Mill Drives and new armature supplies for the Auxiliary Drives.

For the Main Drives, we have experience with both MG set upgrades and SCR retrofit packages. Our ADDvantage-32 Family of drive products includes standard designs for generator field regulators, motor field regulators, and 12-pulse, multi-parallel solid state drive retrofits. The size of the typical auxiliary drives on these mills is ideally suited for the compact armature drive sizes we offer.

The architecture for a Plate Mill System typically consists of the drives communicating to both the drive PLC and the Mill Master System. The communication is implemented using the high-speed, fiber-optic Ethernet Network that is built into each drive. With this architecture, the mill rolling schedule can be easily downloaded to the Rolling Mill drives between each pass for setting up the mill for the next pass.
