Iron and Steel Production
.
IRON and STEEL PRODUCTION Avtron is The Uptime Expert for these critical areas in the mill. Avtron has extensive experience in applying drive and diagnostic systems in Iron and Steel Producing and Casting Applications. We have provided engineered drive and diagnostic system solutions for many North American and Asian Iron and Steel Making customer's Blast Furnace Skip Hoists, BOF/BOP Shop Vessel Tilt Systems and Continuous Slab/Billet/Bloom Casters.
The Skip Hoists and Vessel Tilt Systems are extremely critical applications where reliability and on-line back-up systems are crucial to the mill. These back-up systems allow multiple configurations of motors and drives so that the Blast Furnaces and the BOF Vessel can be charged even in the event of a control system failure.
Avtron's Performance View Process Diagnostic System has been used in these critical areas of the mill to maximize uptime and prevent lost heats. The system automatically records events, status bits, drive values, and PLC data from the controllers on the Skip Hoist, Vessel, and Caster. This data can be displayed real-time or historical and is easily manipulated and searched through our P.V. Viewer software. This allows easier and faster troubleshooting and repair of a problem, thereby savings tens of thousands of dollars in lost production. It can also be used to establish 'normal running conditions' as part of a Preventive or Predictive Maintenance Program. |

Blast Furnace Skip Hoist |

Avtron has project experience in Blast
Furnace Skip Hoist control systems using our ADDvantage-32
(TM)
DC armature drives.
Our experience in the application has led us to develop
on-line back-up systems that allow the hoist to operate even if a motor
or drive failure occurs.
The system uses a two-motor, two-drive
arrangement with each motor sized to fully operate the hoist. The
normal operation is one drive as the master speed regulator and the
other a slave load share regulator. In the event of a motor failure,
the system can be quickly reconfigured for one-motor, one-drive
operation. In addition, the drives are sized at twice the motor rating
so that the system can be configured to run in a one-drive, two-motor
configuration if a drive failure occurs.
We
also have AC solutions
available. We have applied our Performance View Process Diagnostic System to ensure our customers have the
best troubleshooting tool for this critical application.
The system continuously records drive and process data in event and
trending formats. The data can be used for faster and easier drive and
PLC troubleshooting and repair.

BOF
& BOP Vessel Tilt |

 |
Avtron has applied its control system
expertise for this critical application in the steelmaking process. We
have used our ADDvantage-32
(TM) DC armature drive for
Vessel Tilt Upgrades where the existing DC motors are reused. We can
also supply AC drives designs for either new or upgrade projects. Our
Performance View Process Diagnostic System had been
used to uncover intermittent problems that can hinder the productivity
of these furnaces.
The Tilt System normally has two vessels, each using four motors
coupled to a single bull gear to tilt the vessel. The motors are sized
so that the Vessel can be driven if either two, three or four motors are
available. We have extensive project experience with both one-drive and
four-drive system configurations. The one-drive system can be quickly
reconfigured to drive either Vessel A or Vessel B if a drive failure
occurs. The four drive system uses drives sized for up to two motors.
This configuration allows the vessel to be driven by anything from one
to four drives at a time.

Slab, Billet, and Bloom Casters |

Avtron has drive installations worldwide in Continuous Casting
Applications. We have supplied new and retrofit solutions using our
ADDvantage-32 (TM)
Family of DC Drive and Retrofit Products. Our first
Caster installation was in 1992 at a large integrated steel mill in
India. We recently introduced a new family of AC drives that expands our
capabilities for these projects.
The advanced drive software and hardware
features in both the DC and the AC drives are ideally suited for Caster
Applications. The drives can coordinate the speeds of the sections on
the Caster without requiring the use of an expensive, hard-to-maintain
Master Controller.
The system architecture for Caster
Applications uses high-speed, fiber-optic Ethernet Communications
built into the drives to interface to a standard PLC. Since the drives
coordinate the speed reference directly from drive to drive, the PLC
interface is used for logic and data acquisition only. This means the
PLC program can be simpler and easier to maintain. |
